Dr. Michael Smith joined CVHS on October 1, 2020.
“I am honored to become the next principal at Conestoga Valley High School,” Smith said. “It is evident that the Conestoga Valley School District is a student-centered and community-focused school district with a long history of success and provides a well-rounded education that includes strong academics, athletics, extracurricular activities, and character education. I am extremely excited for this opportunity to build upon the district’s previous success and I cannot wait to serve the students, parents, teachers and community of the Conestoga Valley School District."
Smith joined Conestoga Valley following a nearly four-year tenure as the principal at Columbia High School in Columbia, Pa. In total, Smith boasts nearly 16 years of administrative experience at the secondary level and holds a doctorate in Educational Leadership from Immaculata University..
As principal at Columbia High School, Smith instituted several new initiatives, including the implementation of a boys mentoring group, a redesign of attendance procedures, and the launching of the Rising Tide of Literacy and Collins Writing initiatives. He also led the school’s Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI) Team, managed Title I funding and compliance, oversaw fiscal and facility management, and served as the interim Director of Extracurricular Activities.
Prior to arriving at Columbia, Smith spent over 11 years in the Warwick (Pa.) School District. Smith served as an assistant principal at the high school for two years (2005-07) before being named assistant principal at the middle school in 2007, a role he held for two years. In November of 2009, he was named the principal of the middle school and served in that role until moving onto Columbia High School in October of 2016.
As principal at Warwick, Smith was accountable for the creation and implementation of professional development, orientation, parent outreach programs, and the school’s Comprehensive Plan, in addition to his many other obligations.
Smith began his educational career as a science teacher at Sierra Vista Junior High School in Canyon, Country, Calif. He then spent time as a science teacher at Marley Middle School (Glen Burnie, Md.) and South River High School (Md.).
His first administrative job came as Acting Assistant Principal at South River High School (Md.) in 2004.
Smith received a Bachelor of Science degree from Penn State University in 1996 and earned his Master of Education degree in Administration and Supervision from Loyola (Md.) College in 2005. He also holds a Secondary Education Earth Science certification from Millersville University.
