School Counseling Services

  • School Counseling Services

At Gerald G. Huesken Middle School, we want students to succeed in school as well as in life after middle school. Consequently, we work within a comprehensive program to meet the needs of all the students in the middle school. This program involves individual and group meetings with their school counselor as well as providing resources and services to meet each of their unique interests, abilities and needs.

We are available to meet with students individually to address academic and personal issues. In an effort to meet the social and emotional needs of all students, both counselors are active members of the Student Assistance Program at the middle school level.

Counselors serve as liaisons between parents, teachers, students, administrators, and community agencies concerning the child's social development as related to school success. They also provide information related to school services and community resources.

School counselors must complete master's coursework in Counselor Education and state certification as a school counselor. School counseling focuses on areas such as child development, consultation, individual counseling, conflict resolution, small group counseling, and career development.

When students arrive at GHMS, they are assigned to a counselor according to their last name alphabetically. The student will stay with that counselor through their entire two years at the middle school. We feel that this method helps to establish and foster relationships between the counselor, the student, and the student’s family.

    Academic Support

We meet regularly with students who are struggling academically. After receiving progress reports, we meet with these students to strategize ways to help them be more successful. We may suggest working with a teacher during Study Hall or a peer tutor, study skills, or remediation.

The guidance office assists students with the course selection process. We begin meeting with students in the spring to begin selecting appropriate courses for their schedule for the next year.
