Flexible Instruction Days (FIDs)

What are Flexible Instruction Days?

A Flexible Instruction Day (FID) is a program available to Pennsylvania public school entities to be used as an alternate approach to delivering instruction if a circumstance arises that prevents instruction in a customary manner. More information can be found here. A district may institute up to five (5) flexible instructional days in a school year which count towards the PDE-required minimum of 180 days.

When does the District utilize a FID?

The District may choose to utilize a remote learning day(s) when the built-in makeup dates have all been utilized. In addition, The District may choose to utilize a FID rather than a makeup day(s) if inclement weather has the potential to impact several consecutive school days and/or it is early in the winter season and the District wants to preserve makeup dates for later in the winter season.

How and when will I know if a FID is being used?

The District will communicate in the same ways it does a normal snow day - email, text, phone call, District website, and social media (Facebook, Instagram). The District will also alert local news outlets, but not every outlet allows for the designation of a FID vs. a snow day (and some news outlets refer to a FID as a virutal learning day), so please check the District outlets for the most accurate information.

Help! I'm having technical issues!

Having a technology issue? For issues related to work posted in Seesaw or Schoology, students should contact their teacher(s).

If students experience issues with Internet access or district technology during the FID, please immediately contact the CVSD Instructional Technology Department at 717-399-1553 for assistance. Calls and voicemails will be actively monitored. When leaving a message, please include the student’s first and last name, call back number, and a brief description of the issue.

What does a FID look like for my student?

That will vary depending on grade level, but every student will take part in asynchronous learning (rather than synchronous learning). The District has guidelines in place for each grade level. Below is a brief overview of what to expect at various grade levels; please note this is NOT a comprehensive overview; specific questions should be directed to the building principal/assistant principal.

Pre-K & Elementary:

All students are expected to actively participate in learning & complete assigned work asynchronously. Students will have access to Teachers for at least two (2) hours during established “office hours.” Teachers will communicate information regarding their office hours & how to contact them if needed.
Students & families may message teachers on Seesaw/Schoology or by email with questions or if assistance is needed.
Pre-K-Grade 2: Paper packets of assignments for each student.
Grades 3-5: SeeSaw and/or Schoology assignments
CVVA students should follow their regularly scheduled procedures for a school day, as explained during orientation. Please review the CVVA handbook and/or contact the CVVA Coordinator or Special Services Facilitator with questions.

Middle & High School

What can I expect during a FID Day for my student with an IEP?

FID lessons will be designed for each student by their special education teacher based on their individualized education program (IEP). Activities will reflect content or skills the student is practicing. Students should complete the work to the best of their abilities and submit it according to directions provided.

Upon return from an FID, special education teachers will review work submitted, checking for completion and understanding. If needed, the students will receive additional support to complete the activities and to ensure their understanding. Related services will not be provided during FID days.
