Title I Sponsored Parent Opportunity!

Calm minds and bodies, as well as connected hearts, are required for a child to regulate emotions and behavior. Current circumstances make those things very difficult. Learn how the current pandemic affects your child's stress response system and how to bring calming and connection into your parenting. You will also participate in mindfulness practices that will help bring calm to your mind and body, reminding you of the importance of self-care.

You will learn these strategies on your own time and at your own pace. This 2-hour web based course, Resilience: Responding to Adversity with Calming and Connection, will guide you step-by-step through calming your child's nervous system, deepening your connection, and coaching safe, responsible choices. You will also be treated to guided mindfulness practices that will relax your body and focus your mind. Also included is the opportunity to participate in two 1-hour online discussions with the instructors and other parents about the calming, connecting, and coaching strategies. Dates and times to be determined. If you are not able to attend the sessions in person, they will be recorded for you to watch at your convenience.

As a bonus, Title I funds will provide a pulse oximeter for families who participate in this entire series (as the budget allows, based upon numbers of participants):

Coaching children to notice the sensations in their bodies so that they can manage the sensations and use them to make responsible and safe choices is often difficult. There is a way to make the internal states of our bodies concrete and measurable: heart rate tracking. 

Typically, when our heart rates are elevated we are excited, anxious, or afraid. When our heart rates are lower, we are calm and relaxed. Having students notice their heart rates, and then notice how heart rates go up and down based on how we feel and what we do is empowering. Children feel a sense of control, and unmanageable feelings become more manageable. 

A pulse oximeter is a tool that facilitates heart rate monitoring. Using the pulse oximeter to measure heart rates on a consistent basis over time, at home and at school, fosters children's abilities to notice and manage feelings.
