Back to School: 2022-23 Edition

The 2022-23 school year is just around the corner. To help prepare families for the start of the year, the  2022-23 Back to School packet is now available!

The document contains some important back-to-school information: what you might have missed over the summer, where to find important information, and more. It is not a comprehensive document, but rather is intended to give a district-wide overview of some key information as we start another school year.

Much of the information available in the above PDF has also been made available below:

Welcome back!
We hope that everyone had a fun, safe, and enjoyable summer break and that you are ready for the start of the 2022-23 school year!

This document contains some important back-to-school information: what you might have missed over the summer, where to find important information, and more. It is not a comprehensive document, but rather is intended to give a district-wide overview of some key information as we start another school year. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to your building principal and/or assistant principal(s), or the District Office (717-397-2421).

An Update from Food Services
The universal free meal waiver officially expired on June 30, 2022. More information can be found here. Please read this information carefully, even if you believe you may not qualify for free/reduced meals.

Sapphire - It’s Important!
CV uses Sapphire as its Student Information System (SIS). Each student has his/her own account and each parent/guardian must also create his/her own parent account. More information can be found here.

It is imperative that you keep your contact information up to date. There is also a preferred way in which you should list your phone numbers. Read the information below from Sapphire:

“If a cell phone number is listed in the ‘Phone 1’ field then it is not seen as a cell phone and rather is recognized as the primary phone number. While this will work for automated phone calls, parents/guardians will not receive SMS (text) messages. To resolve this, list the cell phone information to both Phone 1 and Phone 2. The Phone 2 information will then pick up the proper information for SMS communications.”

New Faces
CV is welcoming a host of new staff members to its team this school year. Of note, Gerald G. Huesken Middle School, Leola Elementary, and Smoketown Elementary will have new principals at the helm. Dr. Rachel Metzinger - who previously served as an assistant principal at CVHS - was named the middle school’s new principal. In addition, Ms. Taylor Alouisa will take over as principal at Leola Elementary and Ms. Kathleen (Katie) Hernandez will serve as Smoketown Elementary’s principal. Alouisa spent the last year serving as CV’s assistant elementary principal and interim principal at Smoketown while Hernandez comes to CV from the School District of Lancaster.

In addition, Eric Hollinger was named an assistant principal at Gerald G. Huesken Middle School and Melissa Swarr was hired as an assistant principal at Conestoga Valley High School.

And we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the 40+ new teachers and staff members who will also join the district this school year!

New CVHS Traffic Pattern
There will be a new traffic pattern at Conestoga Valley High School this year. Parent drop-off and pickup will take place in front of the main entrance of the high school. Bus drop-off and pickup will take place on the side parking lot adjacent to the new turf fields.

Also new this year - an additional location for high school student parking.

Please be patient as everyone learns to navigate the new traffic patterns.

Health information
Like 2021-22, the 2022-23 health data sheets are available online. Note: grade levels do have specific requirements; this webpage has more information and please contact your building nurse with any additional questions! In addition, information on the Children’s Health Insurance Program (C.H.I.P.) can be found here

Finally, an informational video on how to access and complete the forms can be found here.

Where can I find out what events are going on?
The district has calendars available online. There are both academic and activities calendars available in PDF format in addition to an online calendar. All calendars are updated as quickly as possible when events are added, removed, or changed, but if you have any questions, be sure to reach out to your student’s building or event organizer.

Be On the Lookout!
The CVSD website will look a little different in the near future! But don’t worry; while it may look different, all the information will still be there. However, if you do find yourself having a difficult time finding information on the new website, a video tour will be forthcoming to walk you through the new site and where to find all the information you need!

New Gerald G. Huesken Middle School
CV is excited to open its doors to the brand new Gerald G. Huesken Middle School! The team at the middle school worked hard to put together a plan that will allow the district to open the new building with a focus on the learning community and safety of the students and staff.

The school year will begin with a staggered start (this applies ONLY to the middle school) in order to provide a thorough orientation of the new building for each student, with additional staff available for students on their first day of school.

More information and any additional updates can be found on the district homepage.

Have a question? It's probably answered here:
If you have a question regarding almost any school-related issue, chances are it might be answered in the 2022-23 student handbook. The handbook is a board-approved document (approved July 18, 2022) and thus changes are not made to it during the year unless presented to and approved by the board.

Also, be sure to check out the “Quick Links” section found on the district homepage as well as on each school’s individual webpage; information that needs to be frequently accessed can often be found in that section. And please be sure to take some time to explore the district and school webpages; there is a wealth of information on calendars, departments, events, etc.
